spiritual life is our life (Renovation
of the Heart, p. 18). Why? Because we are made in the image of God. We are spiritual people. We are not physical people with a spiritual aspect. We are spiritual people; we are made for God, not for our bodies or for the world. But our spirits must be formed and transformed according to God’s blueprints in Scripture. This inner life or spiritual life must be
transformed if we are to grow beyond the shallows of the Gospel. Thus spiritual
formation is the process by which the
human spirit is given a definite ‘form’ or character like that of Jesus.
Through spiritual formation, we gain a Christ-like character in the depths our
being, gaining a specific type of character—in line with God’s original plan
for humanity. ---HOW does spiritual formation take place?--- We become like that which we
seek. Spiritual formation into the
likeness of Christ comes through chosen purpose—one that is chosen again and
again by the way we spend our time and our mental energy. ---How do we seek God?--- ‘Grace thrives on method and method
thrives on grace’ (Willard,
